BEENOMIX Project:Come and find out who is making all this possible

The BEENOMIX project is divided into three distinct projects financed by the Lombardy Region as part of Measure 16 of the Rural Development Program 2014 – 2020:

BEENOMIX – Innovation in beekeeping: Genomics for Selection and Biodiversity 2017-2019
EAFRD – (Rural Development Program 2014 – 2020, Measure 16 “Cooperation”, Operation 16.2.01)

BEENOMIX 2.0 – Genomics and Sustainability in Beekeeping 2020-2022
EAFRD – (Rural Development Program 2014-2020, Measure 16 – “Cooperation”, Operation 16.1.01)

BEENOMIX 3.0 – Breeding Varroa resistant bees 2023-2024
EAFRD – (Rural Development Program 2014-2020, MEASURE 16 – “Cooperation”, Operation 16.1.01)

BEENOMIX 3.0 is made up of an aggregation of two important Lombard beekeeping companies and two scientific institutions based in the Lombardy Region:

Lead partner of the specially formed ATS led by Elio Bonfanti. Lead-partner of the project and led by Elio Bonfanti. Working group composed of Elio Bonfanti, Elisabetta Bestetti, Cristiano Arienti and Daniela Fumagalli
The company, which has been in the beekeeping business since 1996, specializes in breeding and marketing queen bees for the domestic and European professional market. Beginning in 2015, the company developed a breeding activity aimed at developing high-performance genetic lines adapted to the changing environment in which it operates. Through participation in Beenomix projects, and thus in constant coordination with scientific partner UNIMI – DIVAS (formerly DIMEVET), he has built a solid expertise in breeding, controlled mating management and rational phenotype measurement.

The company, active since 1996 in the beekeeping sector, specializes in the breeding and sales of queen bees for the national and european professional market. Since 2015, the company has developed a selection activity aimed at developing high-performance genetic lines adapted to the changing environmental context in which it operates. Thanks to participation in the Beenomix projects, and therefore in constant coordination with the scientific partner University of Milan, it has built solid expertise in breeding, in the management of controlled matings and in the rational measurement of phenotypes..

Working group composed of Prof. Giulietta Minozzi (Scientific Coordinator of the project) and Dr. Renata Piccinini
Professional beekeeping company specialized in the queen bee breeding sector, an area in which it has developed solid skills in the management of isolated mating stations. The company has built an ongoing partnership with the lead company Melyos which was consolidated during the Beenomix projects and has developed technical-professional skills dealing specifically with the management of controlled mating in isolated mating stations.

Working group composed of Prof. Giulietta Minozzi (Scientific Coordinator of the project) and Dr. Renata Piccinini
The Department organizes and guarantees research structures and promotes their strengthening and adaptation to carry out research programs, also in collaboration with public institutions and private, national and international companies. The staff of the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences involved in the project have extensive experience in research implemented through national and international projects. As regards the beekeeping sector, Prof. Minozzi coordinated the BEENOMIX Project – Innovation in Beekeeping: Genomics for Selection and Biodiversity and acted as Scientific Coordinator of the second project BEENOMIX 2.0 – Genomics and Sustainability in Beekeeping.

Measure 16

"Cooperation"

Submeasure 16.1

"Support for the establishment and management of EIP Operational Groups on agricultural productivity and sustainability"

Operation 16.1.01

"IEP Operations Groups" composed of Prof. Giulio Pagnacco, Dr. Stefano Biffani and Dr. Alessandra Stella Pilot Projects and Innovation Development, Operation 16.2.01. The Institute, based in Milan, has extensive experience in research implemented through national and international projects. In detail, Dr. Alessandra Stella has consolidated experience as coordinator and "work package leader" in many European projects relating to genetics and genomics applied to animal production. As regards the beekeeping sector, Dr. Alessandra Stella, Dr. Biffani and Prof. Pagnacco participated in the BEENOMIX Project - Innovation in Beekeeping: Genomics for Selection and Biodiversity and in the BEENOMIX 2.0 project - Genomics and Sustainability in Beekeeping.
